Coronation Street has had its fair share of heartbreak and health battles — and one of those came in the loss of Summer Spellman’s adoptive father, Drew.
Drew was the ex-boyfriend of vicar Billy Mayhew, who discovered he had multiple lung and brain tumors in 2017 – and only had months to live.
Drew was desperate to test Todd and Billy’s relationship when he hit the cobbles, and then asked if they would consider adopting Summer, before he sadly died of heart failure.
What ensued was Drew’s homophobic mother fighting for custody of Summer, with Summer eventually being allowed to stay with Todd and Billy.
But where is Drew actor Tom Godwin now? From her real-life relationship to her music career, Daily Star takes a look.
Despite only appearing in nine episodes of Corrie, Tom has had an incredibly eclectic career.
In addition to being an actor, he plays guitar in the cover band Painter’s Radio, which “deconstructs pop, rock and soul classics” before “putting them together with big harmonies”.
The five-piece band has other day jobs, but has organized a series of concerts that encourage audience participation.
In a throwback snap of the band from 2013, Tom can be seen strumming his acoustic guitar in a baggy beige shirt and jeans while obviously delighting the audience.
The star also co-managed a theater company, before quitting to continue acting full-time – but before that he made a name for himself as part of the Illusion Brothers mime act at the Edinburgh Festival.
Rival soap roles
Coronation Street isn’t Tom’s only claim to Soapworld fame – he’s also appeared in everything from EastEnders to Holby City.
His first television role came in 2000, when he played a charity worker in Albert Square, before playing Darren Holdgate in a 2013 episode of BBC’s Doctors.
He played two different characters on the medical soap Holby City – first Dave Carson in 2008 and then Sonny Lomax in 2017.
One of her biggest roles came in the Hollywood movie About Time alongside Rachel McAdams and Domhnall Gleeson.
Lynx advertising fame
Away from his role as reliable dad Drew, Tom found fame in 2003 – aged 27 – in a Lynx TV commercial, which saw him rocking and playing guitar on Room 5’s Make Luv.
In a 2000s-style blazer and baggy shirt, he asked the ladies to get close to him in the deodorant ad.
Tom admitted he wowed during his audition by performing silly dances to stand out, explaining: “I showed up to the audition and saw a room full of chiseled hopefuls, so I had to stand out from the crowd.”
He also appeared in an ad for soft drink company Sprite, which saw him slip into a greasy kebab alongside a CGI goblin.
Speaking to MailOnline about the switch from ‘geeky to chic’, Tom admitted he had girls all over him after the advert aired – although he was dating literary agent Lucy at the time .
He told the publication at the time, “I can’t go out without people looking at me or girls talking to me. I get gorgeous girls who smile at me, throw their arms around me, or plant smackers on my cheeks.
“My girlfriend doesn’t get it – I’m just her tall, lanky boyfriend after all.”
Tom wasn’t her tall, lanky boyfriend for long, as the couple later married.
They share a home in south east London with their two children, Sylvan and Cai.
Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 p.m. on ITV.
