Defensive staff changes; lack of tenacity; possible withdrawals from the bowl

Steve Helwagen of hosted his weekly chat Monday night on the Front Row bulletin board. Check out the transcript below.

Recall: Steve will be attending Ohio State Buckeyes Live at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. This is a weekly hour-long webcast devoted to Ohio State football. Look for the video panel posted on The Front Row on Wednesday afternoon.

Twin55: Are there any discussions as to whether Coach Day will be looking for new defensive coaches now or after the Rose Bowl? The offense will again be excellent, but the defense needs to be rethought.

Helwagen: Yes, we shared Day’s comments on this during Sunday’s media session. He doesn’t admit anything publicly, but he said he’s constantly evaluating what the best course with the staff would be. Reading between these lines, there will be some sort of change.

But the digital way to handle this is to let the current staff finish the bowl game. He could be traveling to meet with assistant coach candidates or interview them remotely. But I guess no one will be announced publicly until sometime after the bowl game.

I think there will be some sort of change. What will be remains to be seen.

ButlerBuck: When do you think McCord told the staff he was coming back? Lots of speculation about Ewers vs. McCord vs. Brown.

Helwagen: I don’t know if he did, unless someone saw a social meeting ad that I didn’t see. I don’t know what you are referring to. I guess he’s sticking around and positioning himself to be the incumbent in 2023.

Ozzman22: Steve, I’ve been keeping an eye on the coach carousel around college football, I’m a little surprised OSU hasn’t done anything so far !. I think we all agree that something needs to be done, I also think the more OSU plays the waiting game until after the Rose Bowl the closet is a bit empty. I just don’t understand what is taking Ryan, OSU’s time to give the help he so badly needs ?. I understand that it will take some time for the players, the new coaches to improve, it will not be a miracle solution !!. But recruiting, giving these players much needed coaches together, I think that will be huge for OSU. If Ryan walks in next year without doing anything with this staff, it might haunt him, IMO !. I am just speechless as to why nothing has been done at this point !!. Your thoughts Steve, Go Bucks

Helwagen: OK, I understand your sense of urgency, but he’s not rushing to hire. He wants to get it right and make sure they have a good alignment for 2022 in terms of job descriptions and responsibilities. He may already know who he wants. Either way, the new recruit wouldn’t be working with the squad during bowl training.

It will happen when the time is right and I’m sure he’ll get who he wants to interview for it. It is attractive work that pays well. Breathe deeply. It’s going to work.
