Encanto | A conversation with part of the animation team Renato dos Anjos and Kira Lehtomaki [Exclusive Interview]

We are about a month away from the release of Encanto. This is the next offering from Disney Animation Studios. This time the magic of Disney will take us to the beautiful country of Colombia. Here we will meet the Madrigals, an extraordinary family who live hidden in the mountains of the country in a magical house. Specifically, we will focus on a young girl named Maribel who, in a family full of magical abilities, has none.

Through the history of this family in Encanto, Disney will showcase the diversity, culture, people and music of Colombia. To make sure they had the right elements, the film’s creative team had a variety of consultants who had different backgrounds to make sure everything was as authentic as possible. Some of them also took a trip to Colombia to experience Colombia. It is through all of this research that they have been able to embrace the dynamism, vitality and sincerity of the Columbina community.

But all of that work would be wasted if it wasn’t displayed properly on screen by Disney’s amazing animation team. For this, we can turn to Renato dos Anjos and Kira Lehtomaki. They are part of the film’s animation team. Dos Anjos oversees the character animation, working with a team of animators to realize the directors’ vision for each character’s personality. Lehtomaki is the head of animation having worked on films such as Zootopia, Frozen, Tangled and so many others.
