New on DVD: ‘West Side Story’ updates star-crossed lovers story | national news

Steven Spielberg’s take on a classic musical tops the DVD releases for the week of March 15.

‘West Side Story’: A remake of the beloved 1961 film based on ‘Romeo and Juliet’ about the forbidden love and rumblings between the Sharks and the Jets on the streets of New York, starring Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler in the role of Tony and Maria.

Spielberg’s ‘West Side Story’ celebrates the original film, but also experiments and engages meaningfully with the text, unearthing new meaning even if experiments don’t always succeed, as a reimagining of ‘Cool’ as a plea desperate between old friends rather than a lamentation,” Tribune News Service reviewer Katie Walsh wrote in her review. “The result is nothing less than an incredibly exciting work that connects the old and the new in fascinating ways.”
