New webcam shows traffic flow from Route 1A

A new webcam recently installed on the Ellsworth Town Communication Tower on Route 1A gives us an awe-inspiring view of the lights of Ellsworth at night and the mountains of Mount Desert Island in the distance.

It also shows how busy Route 1A can get at times.

Jason Ingalls, the city’s IT director, asked a team to install the new camera while they installed a new communications antenna on the tower for the Ellsworth Fire Department. Ingalls sets up these web cameras across town in pretty much his personal time, and the cameras can be viewed at City of Ellsworth, Maine on Youtube.

the advantageous position east on the east side of route 1A, just before the big white church and where the red bridge route enters 1A on the other side of the road. The camera shows the enormous amount of traffic in both directions during rush hour, and how busy the thoroughfare is between Brewer and Ellsworth.

It’s interesting to see the city lights in the distance at night. Besides those on Myrick Street on the hill where Home Depot and Walmart are located, one can only assume that the bright glare is produced by these lights on the High Street as well. Flashing beacons from other communication towers can be seen to the right, as well as some of the lights atop windmills in the far left of the screen.

One thing we look forward to is seeing a thunderstorm in the distance towards Ellsworth and MDI. I bet it’ll be quite a show.
