WhatsApp gives us a glimpse of Android chat migration to iOS

WhatsApp is not only one of the most popular chat apps out there, it’s also one of the fastest growing. It’s long been known that WhatsApp’s beta program has given us an enticing glimpse into the future, revealing some of what’s to come, and that’s once again the case with the latest preview of the iOS version of WhatsApp. chat app.

The latest preview shows that WhatsApp is going to make life a little easier for anyone switching from an Android phone to an iPhone. We’ve already seen chat migration enabled for people leaving iOS, but now the focus is on users moving in the opposite direction.

In the WhatsApp for iOS 22.2.74 beta, we have a preview of what the chat migration to the iOS process will look like. We’ve already seen evidence of this in the Android app beta, but now we know a bit more about how things are going on the iPhone side.

It appears that the migration process will not be entirely handled by the main WhatsApp application itself, but will instead require the use of a Switch to iOS app too. The screenshots of the latest beta version of the iOS app give us a clear indication of the look and feel of the Import chat history to treat.

As you might expect, you need to allow WhatsApp to access your chat history in order to start the migration process. Interestingly, and perhaps slightly worryingly, it appears that the chat history import offer is a one-time offer. An on-screen message informs users that “You will not be able to import later if you skip this step”.

At this point, we don’t have any further information on when WhatsApp plans to start rolling out this feature to everyone. We also don’t know what versions of iOS and Android will be supported, but more details will certainly emerge over the coming weeks and months.
